Club Underground - NE Minneapolis
It has been way too long since I have updated this front page. Almost a year and a half! So for those of you that may have missed it, last year we did win the battle to make stand-up comedy legal in under a class A liquor license. Huzzah! And in keeping with the victory won by the comics, the producers, and the two establishments that stepped up to the regulatory and pleaded our case; we have started the Sunday Funday Comedy Show back up. Also, we are mixing in comedy shows to our regular schedule of events. Keep an eye on the calendar for some of the great shows we have coming up, in the basement of your neighborhood watering hole, Club Underground @ The Spring Street Tavern. Remember, things in green on the calendar are events upstairs in the Spring Street Tavern itself. 355 NE Monroe st, Minneapolis, MN, 55413 (612) 627-9123 |

Wow, is it really this warm in February? |
And yes, it has been far too long... A lot has been going on around here. First of all, there is no comedy in Club Underground at The Spring Street Tavern. This is not our doing. From what I have been told, the comedians have consulted a lawyer, and there is a matter of interpretation by the city council of Minneapolis concerning the differences between the class A and class B liquor licenses. If you feel strongly enough that Stand-up comedy should not be counted as a theater performance or skit performance, I strongly advise you to contact your city council member. This is not something that just affects Club underground at The Spring Street Tavern, but many venues with in the city limit. One other bit of bad news, before we move over to good news; Deb Winslow, our long-time day time bar tender and book keeper, passed away from a heart attack on Super Bowl Sunday. We send all o0f our love to her family and friends in the time of her loss. On to new business: Tuesday nights Form is no longer here, but we have started a new dance night on Sundays, named Red Skies. It is all the great music from the late eighties and early nineties. Come hear your favorite RED SKIES. A new FREE 21+ dance night at club underground in the Club Underground at The Spring Street Tavern. The music will touch on a broad range of genres like new wave, alternative, pop, punk, industrial, electro, hip hop, and dark. Drink specials include 2.75 rails and 2.75 taps till midnight. There will be regular guest Djs, It's fun, and what else is going on Sunday nights? The first one was a hoot. Plus, I'll be your bartender. Also... keep checking the calender; we have some great line ups of bands coming in regularly, and we will keep trying to provide you with the best local music and events we can for you, our beloved guests. Prost! Josh

Is It Really this hot, or is it just the Music? |
Ah, when a heat wave like this hits in spring, you know it’s going to be a long summer with a lot of dog days that will drag on. What better way to cut the heat, then to find a nice cool basement full of beverages and live music? Marc and I are hard at work putting together some really amazing shows for the summer months for you to enjoy. Now that the rest of the country thinks the snow is almost melted here, some great bands are coming back into the twin cities to give us a dose of their music, and we are pulling in some really fun acts that you won’t find anywhere else. Also, a lot of new hot local acts are coming out of the woodwork, and rocking our faces off. You should come down, cool off, and enjoy the shows! Also, remember, if you believe that live stand up comedy should be allowed in the city of Minneapolis at anywhere but theaters and strip clubs please contact your city council person. Currently, only clubs with a Class A license can have stand-up comedy. This is the category of license reserved for strip clubs, theaters, and arenas. Although we can have as many musicians as we can fit in this place all playing at the same time with multiple amplified instruments a piece, all having vocal microphones, due to the current interpretation and phrasing of the licensing, we cannot have one person behind a microphone telling jokes. In a city that is supportive of the arts, this is possibly the sickest joke on the community. Please contact your city council person, and let them know that this is not fair to the artists, nor the community as a whole. The vote by the council is set for mid June. Thanks, and hope to see you soon! |

Does that Snow Smell Funny to You? |
And it has descended upon us. Yes, again this blanket of frigid powder has enveloped the cities, and we scurry about stressing ourselves out over holidays, heating bills, and what we are going to do to keep from staring at the walls of the house.... Well have I got a few things for you to bring you away from the abyss of cabin fever and hibernation! Instead of just sitting on our laurels over here, Marc and I have been concocting some new, and some classic events to help keep you from clawing your eyeballs just yet. Back Pack Productions Have taken over Tuesdays with their new DJ Night FORM. It starts at ten, with ladies getting in for free, and only $2.00 for the guys. Great drink specials abound on this one, so come out and dance. Wednesday nights are being Conquered with comedy, by COMEDY AMBUSH! with The Dez. Once again, some sick drink specials, comedy, and special guests abounding. Although most of you probably know this, every time there is a Vikings game, regardless of the incompetence of Childress, we put up the Big Screen on the stage to watch the game. Half time snacks, and prize drawings, stadium cup specials on miller lite... you know the drill. Hey, we even pull the couches and coffee tables out in front of the stage, so you can feel like it's the obnoxious home theater you have always wanted. And then, Football game permitting, we have The Sunday-Funday Comedy Show, where we give a nod of the hat to all service industry employees. And let us not forget, the holiday that everyone looks at for a good time: New Years Eve! Alright, I have to admit, I am Quivering while I type this... we thought that just one show on New years Eve was too small. I mean really; what would establish it as something different than any other night of the week? A champagne Toast? NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU, OUR FAITHFUL FRIENDS! So after Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many cocktails and too much coffee, we started looking at giving you the three ring circus you want, nay, demand out of a New Years party. We have genetically melded three shows into one. Which gives us The Club Underground New Years Eve Social Engagement Of The Year! Featuring The Anonymus, The Spent 50's, Foxy Tann's Twin Titties Burlesque, Comedy Ambush!, and Lusurfer presale tickets available @ www.vitalculture.com To check out more details on any of these shows, click on them on the event calendar. Also, check out the events in green on the calendar, to see some of the wicked-cool stuff going on upstairs in The Spring Street Tavern. Happy Holidaze! I am now going to attempt the first liver failure by Guinness infused egg-nog.
